Lisa’s Calgary Model Shoot

What can you do with a model in half an hour inside a small concrete room with a dirt floor?

Lisa had emailed me a while back to see if we could set up a shoot for when she was going to be in Calgary next time (she’s from Ontario) and after checking out the awesome work in her portfolio I was happy to make the time. Lisa was excellent to work with! Very professional and easy to get along with. We worked so fast in this little area and Lisa went through such a cool variety of poses. The grungy concrete box as the sun went down really lent itself to a dark kinda vibe in the photography and, even though that is a bit of a departure for me, I went along with the feel of the place and got the photos below. The last image is creepy, eh? It’s the shadow of one of my assistants holding a bit of wood we found on the ground, shaped like a knife. It’s a bit of a nod to a Joe McNally shot I liked. ;) I’m only posting my seven favourites, but I actually got 29 photos in 32 minutes, with various lighting setups.

Eyes of Isis – Band Shoot

Recently I had the pleasure of doing some band photography for local Alberta band Eyes Of Isis. I love working with other creative people! Even if we aren’t in exactly the same field there is often a kind of understanding between us. Plus, creative people are always willing to go the extra mile to get the best results. These guys were certainly up for anything I threw at them and they endured the cold so that I could get my ideas. You’ll see what I mean when you scroll down. That beach scene? Yeah, they’re lying on snow in sub-zero temperatures with their shirts open. And, yes, we did that particular image fast. ;)

Actually, while we were out there getting that shot another local photographer, Ian from the Lethbridge Herald, happened to pass by and wondered what the heck we were doing. I’ve met him before and he came up to say hello and then tagged along for a bit, getting some photos of the session. If only I’d had one of my assistants with me, then I could have got photos of Ian taking photos of me taking photos of the band! ;)

Speaking of the band, let me introduce them:

Jordan – Lead vocals and guitar
Chase – Lead guitar
Aaron – Drums
Joey – Bass

They were a really fun bunch to get photos of and I think they’ll go far. You can tell that they’re committed to their music and, listening to their songs, they’re very mature for a debut album from such a young band. There are a range of influences you can hear, with nods to the 70s as well as more modern bands, such as Nickleback, but they definitely have their own sound and vision. You can check out their music and see when they are performing by going to their MySpace page. They have CDs for sale there, too, and I recommend them to anyone who is looking for some new rock.

Julie & Jake’s Engagement Session

I’ve been wanting to take a couple into a car wrecking yard for nearly a year and a half now. About a year ago DQ Studios did portraits of Sherri and I in a wrecking yard, which was really cool, but it’s different being in front of the camera to behind it, so when Julie told me that she wanted something kinda edgy for their portraits I saw my chance. :)

Jake and Julie are a great couple and so cool to work with. It would be hard to get a bad photo of them! They were so easy in front of the camera and just so relaxed with each other and in love. We hit a few locations in Calgary, starting with a car wrecking yard and then heading north to see what cool locations we could use in the city centre. We ended up at Stephen Ave, which is such a rich location for photography, especially when they have the lights up in winter. Plus, the pubs and restaurants have really nice ambiance for indoor photos.

We are looking forward to their wedding this year. Here are some of their engagement images. :)

Creativity in Wedding and Portrait Photography

Here are some rambling thoughts from me on creativity. :) It is a very important priority of mine to do something in every shoot a bit differently to the one before and then never repeat those ideas again. I want my clients to have images that are unique to them. This is something I strive for constantly and it is probably the most difficult goal I face. Anyone can learn cool lighting techniques or occasionally catch some great PJ moments, but to be able to create images that have something obviously new about them is really tough.

Creativity is like sleep: you can’t force yourself to sleep, but you can create an environment where sleep is easy and natural. Here are some tips and tricks I’ve discovered over the years on how to tap into your natural creativity.

Newness is the essence of creativity, because something that is original is, by definition, new. A new environment, or new gear, or another photographer to work with all are great ways to stimulate your creative juices, because they introduce something new into your standard way of working. Change is good! Embrace it and see where it takes you.

The next creativity booster is what I call forced boredom. This works completely the opposite way to the previous point—but it does work! Some photographers complain that they have the same venues to work in every week. That’s not a drawback! There are an infinite number of ways you can see the same scene and photograph it. If you think about music, there are a lot of songs that use the same chord sequences, but they can all have their own sound. And, after all, there are only eight notes in the musical scale, but that hasn’t stopped people from creating their own unique compositions for ages.

The way this works is to spend way longer than your comfort zone in one area. First of all, you will see it as a challenge and you’ll come up with some halfway decent images. Next, your optimism will start to fade and you will push yourself, but nothing will turn out quite right. Then you’ll feel like there is nothing more to gain from this. After that you’ll be bored and annoyed. Push through this, because the next section is where the rewards are. Once you let go of all of your previous ideas you will start to see. You will respond reactively and instinctively to your environment. The scientific term for this, believe it or not, is called ‘being in the flow’. It is the state that people find themselves in where they can act quickly and at the height of their skill without thinking about it.

Another way to get yourself in a creative frame of mind is to check out the scene and think, “What can’t I do here”? Consider the impossible. Then think of how you can make it a reality. For example, say you are on a high bridge. You might think of someone leaping off it. Obviously, that’s not a good idea, but it might lead you to think about how you could make it work by using tricky camera angles or Photoshop skills. Or perhaps you could take that scene in your mind and think of how you could make something like it work in a different place. Or maybe it will lead you to a completely new idea that you can use right then.

My last tip for this post is to be inspired. Sounds basic, right? But we need to find the line between inspiration and emulation. I recommend that you don’t look for inspiration in other wedding and portrait photography. Search for it in other places, even abstract ones. Be inspired by colours, by sounds, by the wind, by a person’s laugh, through prayer, by whatever touches you.

So there you go. Be inspired. :)

Best of 2009 – Wedding and Bridal Photography

Happy New Year! :)

Thanks to all our clients from 2009! I have put together a very quick little slideshow of some of my favourite wedding and bridal session images of 2009. I tried to keep it down to only three images per wedding—which was really hard!—but this is meant to be just a glimpse. More images from each wedding can be found on the blog under the weddings category. The one exception is the very last set of wedding photos, because this is a recent wedding that I haven’t even blogged yet, so I thought I’d give them a few more photos in the slideshow. I’ll be blogging the whole wedding soon.

There are three photos from Jessica and three from James Day and the rest are from me. I also need to thank Sherri, Trent, and Doug for assisting and shooting with me this year as well; their help was invaluable to me. There are a lot of portraits in this mix, because I put so much work into them that it’s hard to not choose them as my favourites. And there aren’t really any detail photos in here, either, because this is all about the people! :)

Click on the play arrow below to start the slideshow. Have a great 2010. :)

Christmas with Family

This year we were fortunate enough to be able to have some of my family from Australia come to visit us here in Lethbridge. Actually, they came right before Christmas, but close enough that we celebrated together while they were here. Last year my mum and dad came over at the end of autumn. This year my mum, sister, and my sister’s kids visited us. Lucky them, they came right at the beginning of the cold snap we had where the temperatures plunged to down to -50℃, with the wind chill. Considering that when they flew out from Australia the temperature there was around 28℃ that’s a bit of a difference! So we stayed inside a lot. ;) It was simply too cold to spend more than a couple of minutes outside at a time, so most of the photos I took were fairly candid ones inside with natural light, though I won’t post those, because mostly they’re just people eating and playing games and stuff. And they’re fun images, but they’re more personal-type stuff for our own memories. I did get a few quick posed images inside though, just to have them. On the warmest day, when it got up to around -24℃ we took the kids tobogganing for a couple of hours at the Sugar Bowl. I’ll put a few of those images up.

So, happy Christmas to everyone! And, starting with just one image from when my parents came last year, here are a handful of personal snapshots from this year. :)

More Contest Recognition

Bride.ca has just released the Honourable Mentions of their 2009 contest and we placed there, too. In fact, out of the 35 images six of them are ours! Yay us! :)

Since I didn’t submit any of our photos myself, it is interesting to see the images of ours that their judges chose. A big criteria for them was whether or not an image looked like it was distinctly wedding-y.

Their website says: “What we ultimately looked for was . . . is this a great photo or a great wedding photo? Unfortunately this meant that some incredible photographs did not make the cut, because they could have been anywhere, not necessarily at a wedding.”

This is kind of funny for me to read—and I don’t mean that sarcastically!—because I often deliberately distance myself from creating images that look wedding-y. This is especially true with the more fashion-based ideas that I come up with. I sometimes get inspiration from music photography and movie posters and I try to create a similar sort of commercial or cinematic vibe to my wedding photography—something that looks larger than life and out of the ordinary.

Anyways, I thought I’d comment on the images they chose to give a bit of a story behind each photo. So, for the first time on the blog I present to you: Captions! ;)

photo of kelowna bridal shoot on yacht

This image was tricky to capture! It was taken on a small yacht on Okanagan Lake in Kelowna and the poor girl was sea-sick from the rocking of the boat. I was crouched up the very front of the boat holding a flash in one hand and my camera in the other, trying to frame the shot without getting any clutter in the background, or going blind from having the sun in the viewfinder, or falling over the side. I have two images of this setup and this is one of them. It pays to get it right the first time.

Bride.ca Contest Win

Yay for us! :)

Our studio recently won the Canadian Bridal Network’s Best Wedding Photographs contest of this year, beating nearly 500 other entries. Actually, after the contest results went live I heard that the judges had short-listed a dozen of our photos for the winning spots, but in the end they decided to just use the one image below to represent our studio.

I met the couple in the winning image when I was looking for a wedding dress. Not for myself; for a bridal fashion shoot in B.C. The bride, Caitlin, works in Ten Fashions Bridal Boutique and when one of my models didn’t show I asked her to fill in. She brought along her fianceé, Kelowna DJ Dan Freeman, and so my fashion shoot turned into a real engagement session for them. Because they are an actual couple they brought great energy and true emotional connection to the shoot. Their wedding is in 2010 and will be awesome. :)

Thanks very much also to Trent from Eye For Detail Photography! I actually found out about this contest after receiving an email from Bride.ca saying that Trent had contacted them and told them to check out my work for the contest. Thanks, Trent! :)

Mandy & Craig's Family Portraits

I had Mandy, Craig and their two kids booked in for a family portrait session, but when the day came it turned out to be one of those very windy Lethbridge days. The wind was howling! So we went into an empty barn/storage area kind of place in Coaldale for most of the session. Actually, I’m really happy that the weather let us down, because I loved it in there and I’m always happiest when I get to explore something new—new places, new ideas, or whatever. The space really lent itself to a modern, grungy sort of look, though with my lights I was able to control the existing light for almost any kind of look I wanted. I went with a low-key feel for most of them, just because it felt right.

When we came outside I spotted a wrecked old truck, with peeling paint and rusted metal and we used that as a prop for some quick, fun images. Mandy and Craig were very easy to work with and their son was especially happy when he got to play around in the leaves outside and throw them at me. Ah well. ;) Whatever it takes, right? :) Here are some of my favourite images from their session.
