Best of 2009 – Wedding and Bridal Photography

Happy New Year! :)

Thanks to all our clients from 2009! I have put together a very quick little slideshow of some of my favourite wedding and bridal session images of 2009. I tried to keep it down to only three images per wedding—which was really hard!—but this is meant to be just a glimpse. More images from each wedding can be found on the blog under the weddings category. The one exception is the very last set of wedding photos, because this is a recent wedding that I haven’t even blogged yet, so I thought I’d give them a few more photos in the slideshow. I’ll be blogging the whole wedding soon.

There are three photos from Jessica and three from James Day and the rest are from me. I also need to thank Sherri, Trent, and Doug for assisting and shooting with me this year as well; their help was invaluable to me. There are a lot of portraits in this mix, because I put so much work into them that it’s hard to not choose them as my favourites. And there aren’t really any detail photos in here, either, because this is all about the people! :)

Click on the play arrow below to start the slideshow. Have a great 2010. :)

Matt & Jolene's Waterton Wedding Photography

Congrats to Jolene and Matt! They were married recently in Waterton, at the Bayshore Inn. Well, in the nice grassy area near Waterton Lake outside the Bayshore Inn. :) Of all of our couples these guys are right up there with the most laid-back and easy-going we have ever met. They were really great to work with and their guests were a fun bunch, too.

This was one of the rare weddings from this year where we have been there for the entire day, from the hair and make-up right through most of the reception, instead of just from the ceremony or when the dress goes on. I love being there for the whole process and catching all of the behind-the-scenes preparation and emotions. Jolene and her bridesmaids were getting ready at the Bayshore Inn and were a cool bunch to get photos of as they hung out and ate their Fun-Dips. :) I also popped over to catch the guys, who were at the Bayshore as well, and I grabbed a few images of them getting ready before we went down near the lake for some pre-ceremony portraits.

It was a great day for an outdoor wedding ceremony; sunny with a strong breeze to keep the heat down. After the ceremony we did their family portraits around the Bayshore area before heading off to the Prince of Wales hotel for the bridal party and bride and groom photos to take advantage of the fantastic views from there.

The reception was held back at the Bayshore, with the evening’s entertainment provided by Pyramid Entertainment—oh, and the guys’ dance-off. ;)

Here are some of their images! :)

Corrick & Katherine

Corrick and Katherine were married in Waterton on a beautiful Alberta day.  It was amazing how well the weather and other things worked out for us; we had breeze when we wanted it and no breeze when it would have been a problem.

This was a sort of destination wedding.  :)  That is, it was a destination wedding for many of the guests, who flew in from England and New Zealand to be with Corrick and Katherine.  Sometimes it seemed like Sherri was the only person with a regular Canadian accent!

Corrick and Katherine were both wonderful people, happy and not afraid to express their feelings.  We have lots of photos of them with their emotions written clearly on their faces and there were tears from both of them before the end of the day.  When I was taking photos of Corrick right after he was ready I asked to do one of him looking serious.  ”Don’t smile”, I said.  ”Just look at me with a relaxed, neutral expression”.  Corrick looked up and grinned.  ”Umm, can you try for a more serious expression?  Not smiling this time.”  Corrick looked down and composed himself.  Then he looked up at me and you will see his not-smiling, serious expression in the images below.  ;)

They had awesome wedding rings, too!  The rings were custom made for them by the same company that made the actual rings for The Lord of the Rings movies in New Zealand.  There were many other cool things throughout the day that reflected their unique personalities.

The atmosphere of the day was full of celebration and the reception was one of the less formal ones we’ve been to, in the sense that it felt as though everyone in the whole room was involved and not just sitting and listening from a distance.

Sherri and I wish the happy couple all the best and I’m hoping that now that Corrick is living closer to Katherine’s parents, Bert will one day perfect his English accent.

Brad & Aliya

Congrats to Brad and Aliya who tied the knot recently in Waterton.  :)  They were a real blast!  In fact, the whole wedding party was a lot of fun.  It’s not every wedding you see the first dance turn into a bridal party chorus routine to the tune of Monty Python’s Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life.  And I have so many photos of Aliya laughing.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bride laugh so much!  Aliya also had some fun ideas that we did, like arm-wrestling with her brother, Kareem.  You have to check out the funny, intense expressions in the image I posted from that sequence.  We did a lot of their portraits beforehand, with the family group photos being done at Cameron Falls and the wedding party images being taken all over the place—it is Waterton after all.

Their wedding cake was one of the most creative designs I’ve seen so far.  It was a tropical-themed cake with bamboo-shaped edging and flowers, all in bright colours.

The sunlight was really quite harsh for their ceremony and I remember commenting that it was one of our most challenging lighting situations so far.  Ironically, we’ve now done three weddings in a row with similar conditions and they’ve got progressively harder!  I’m not sure I like how this is going!  Lol!  ;)

The speeches and slideshow were hilarious.  I’m not sure if Brad is going to live some of those moments down, but at least by now he should have come up with a good excuse for that Michael Jackson pic. Anyways, we wish them all the best in their new life together—even though they are Oilers fans.  ;)
